Raphael Saadiq
Monday, September 1, at the Black Cat

By Sarah Godfrey

Raphael Saadiq, for all of his talents and contributions to R&B and soul music, has recently become best known for taking a bunch of butt-naked body-paint pictures with Joss Stone. One ill-conceived, elementary-school-art-class-looking photo shoot with a singer half your age and everyone forgets that you were the brains behind not one but two important acts (Tony! Toni! Toné! and Lucy Pearl), a producer for countless amazing artists (including the Roots and DıAngelo), and a brilliant solo artist (especially 2002ıs Instant Vintage). It doesnıt seem quite fair, does it? Luckily, Saadiq has a new album, The Way I See It—whose lead single, ³Love That Girl,² is a straightforward, no-frills, ı60s soul tribute—that should refocus attention on his music. Expect him to be fully clothed, well-scrubbed, and sounding better than ever. SAADIQ PERFORMS AT 8 P.M. AT THE BLACK CAT, 1811 14TH ST. NW. $25. (202) 667-4490.
