Sea of Bees - A biography
Sea of Bees is the musical project of Julie Ann Bee, or Jules as everyone calls her.
She sings, writes the songs, and plays lots of musical instruments on her albums.
She tours with her band as a four piece, solo, or as a duo with her cohort in harmony, Amber Padgett.
She has played hundreds of shows, from Glastonbury to a private birthday party last week and everything in between.
She loves to play music.
"Some artists have a tendency to leave an audience largely lukewarm or indifferent, but with Sea of Bees, it's hard not to have some kind of a gut reaction. Over the course of the forty-minute set at Mercury Lounge Saturday night (4/30), Baeziger effectively tore down the invisible wall that often stands between the performer and the crowd thanks to her heartfelt delivery and endearing banter."
- Rachel Kowal, Brooklyn Vegan
"Sea of Bees is essentially one woman, Julie Ann Bee. If I had to sum her up in a sentence, she's sort of a female Sparklehorse. Her music is rooted very much in folk and rock but wildly experimental; some crazy, beautiful, wonderful sounds on her new album Songs for the Ravens.
It is in my top 10 for the year."
- Robin Hilton, NPR
"Sublime debut."
- Uncut
4 stars -- Mojo
"A remarkably accomplished singer-songwriter, who has squeezed just about everything onto her debut album, Songs For The Ravens, filling it with melancholy ambience and lush orchestration, her multi-instrumental diversity being ploughed into the record's 11 tracks. From glitch-ridden mood pieces to soaring, churning guitar ensembles, eclecticism is evident without ever disrupting the atmosphere and flow of her debut."
- Q Magazine
"Audiences can have their heads elsewhere when it comes to watching a show in a small space, but when Julie Baenziger -- aka Jules, aka Julie Ann Bee and aka Sea of Bees -- sings out, the music cuts through the room like a knife. The Sacramento folk-pop singer barely needed to raise her voice to command attention at the Echo on Wednesday night. A simple coo and a gentle strum on her guitar quickly drew the crowd to her endearing odes to love. Although only nine songs long, Sea of Bees' set became an emotional roller-coaster. The reverberation of Baenziger's emotional virtue was strong enough for a few seconds of silence to follow her last note -- until the teary-eyed applause took over."
- Kevin Bronson, Buzz Bands LA
"Her brilliant new album, Orangefarben, is a series of love letters to a broken relationship. In repose Baenziger's face is impish and delicate beneath a mop of brown hair. But animated, as she is most of the time -- grinning, pointing at the audience and laughing -- her appearance is magnetic. If she doesn't become the sensation she deserves to be it'll be a crime."
- London Independent
"An impeccable knack for infusing despair with charm. Her pain is the loveless kind...gossamer bedroom haze.... a seasoned sorrow."
- Spin
"Hey everyone Sea of Bees are super Awesome."
- Colin Meloy (Listed Sea of Bees as one of his top 5 albums of 2010)
"I'm not entirely sure why I love this album so much... That which I cannot put my finger on, is the mysterious, wonderful, and addictive qualities of this album as a whole. Bravo to Jules and her Sea of Bees."
- Jason Lytle
"The full-length debut, Songs for the Ravens, reveals folk-tinged indie-pop that's so disarmingly sweet and guileless, so tender in its pleas for emotional connection that it can soften the hardest of hearts, or penetrate the toughest of filters. This one's special, folks, let's not screw it up."
- LA Weekly
"Songs for the Ravens is bound to be one of this year's finest records; as soon as you hear it you're not going to be able to shake it."
- Portland Mercurcy
"It's hard to imagine packing more heartache into a single record than Julie Ann Bee does on Orangefarben."
- NPR's All Songs Considered
"It's the perfect heartbreak album, it's the perfect falling in love album. In a word, it's perfect."
- The Deli
"'I'll be fine,' she sings on the opener, Broke. If you initially doubt Baenziger's chances of that, deeper exposure to this remarkable album leaves you feeling that she may just be right."
- The London Times, CD of the Week
"A wonderfully evocative set of songs, it's very hard to imagine Orangefarben not reducing more and more audiences to deafly silence, as they are left hanging on every sweetly-plucked string and softly-spoken syllable."
- Alex Cull, Thefourohfive
"A spellbinding second album... a collection of melodic pop songs and bruised ballads infused with love, loss, loneliness and wonder. In short a classic break-up album"
- Diva
